Veni Creator Spiritus
The Veni Creator Spiritus is the proper hymn of Pentecost, attributed to Blessed Rabanus Maurus, Archbishop of Mainz (9th c.). It is sung at the Vespers of the solemnity, at ordinations, in conclaves, and in the great invocations of the Holy Spirit. Plenary indulgence for the solemn singing on the first day of the year and at Pentecost.
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
and in our hearts take up your rest;
come with your grace and heavenly aid
to fill the hearts which you have made.
O Comforter, to you we cry,
the heavenly gift of God most high;
the fount of life, the fire of love,
and sweet anointing from above.
You in your sevenfold gifts are known;
the finger of God’s hand we own;
the promise of the Father, you
who do the tongue with power imbue.
Kindle our senses from above,
and make our hearts overflow with love;
with patience firm and virtue high
the weakness of our flesh supply.
Far from us drive the foe we dread,
and grant us your true peace instead;
so shall we not, with you for guide,
turn from the path of life aside.
O may your grace on us bestow
the Father and the Son to know,
and you, through endless times confessed,
of both the eternal Spirit blest.
All glory while the ages run
be to the Father and the Son
who rose from death; the same to you,
O Holy Ghost, our Comforter true. Amen.
In Latin
Veni, Creator Spiritus,
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia,
quæ tu creasti pectora.
Qui diceris Paraclitus,
donum Dei altissimi,
fons vivus, ignis, caritas,
et spiritalis unctio.
Tu septiformis munere,
dextræ Dei tu digitus,
tu rite promissum Patris,
sermone ditans guttura.
Accende lumen sensibus,
infunde amorem cordibus,
infirma nostri corporis
virtute firmans perpeti.
Hostem repellas longius
pacemque dones protinus;
ductore sic te prævio
vitemus omne noxium.
Per te sciamus da Patrem
noscamus atque Filium,
te utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.
Deo Patri sit gloria,
et Filio, qui a mortuis
surrexit, ac Paraclito,
in sæculorum sæcula. Amen.
