Renewal of Baptismal Promises

The Renewal of Baptismal Promises is the act by which the Christian publicly renews the renunciation of sin and the profession of the Catholic faith which he made (or which were made in his name) on the day of his Baptism. It is prescribed by the Roman Missal on the following occasions: Easter Vigil (after the blessing of the baptismal water — the culminating moment), the anniversary of one’s own Baptism, Confirmation, religious profession. The Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1254 underlines that «for all the baptised, children or adults, faith must grow after Baptism. (…) For this reason the Church celebrates each year at the Easter Vigil the renewal of baptismal promises». The structure in three renunciations and three professions reproduces the ancient baptismal dialogue of the Gelasian Sacramentary (8th century).

Renunciations:

P. Do you renounce Satan?
R. I do renounce him.

P. And all his works?
R. I do renounce them.

P. And all his pomps?
R. I do renounce them.

Profession of Faith:

P. Do you believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?
R. I do believe.

P. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered and was buried, rose again from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father?
R. I do believe.

P. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
R. I do believe.

P. This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church, which we glory to profess in Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

(Thereafter, it is traditional to sprinkle the faithful with the newly blessed baptismal water.)
