Psalm 22 (Vulgate) / 23 (Hebrew) — The Lord is my shepherd

The Psalm 22 (so numbered in the Vulgata Clementina; Psalm 23 in the Hebrew numbering and in most modern Bibles) is the most known and most loved of the 150 Psalms of the Psalter. Attributed to King David — who was a shepherd of sheep in Bethlehem before being anointed king — it draws in a few verses the total confidence of the soul in the loving providence of God, under the image of the Shepherd who leads to the waters and to the prepared table. The Lord Jesus took up this image, saying of himself: «I am the good shepherd» (Jn 10:11,14). It is the favoured Psalm for Communion, for the time of illness, and for the hour of death — it is customarily sung at Catholic funerals throughout the world. Dominus regit me, et nihil mihi deerit:
in loco pascuae, ibi me collocavit.
Super aquam refectionis educavit me;
animam meam convertit.
Deduxit me super semitas iustitiae,
propter nomen suum.
Nam et si ambulavero in medio umbrae mortis, non timebo mala,
quoniam tu mecum es.
Virga tua et baculus tuus, ipsa me consolata sunt.
