Prayer to Saint Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles

An apostle born in Tarsus, a persecutor of the Church converted by Christ on the road to Damascus — “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” (Acts 9:4). From a persecutor he became the greatest of missionaries: in three great journeys he proclaimed the Gospel across the Greco-Roman world, founded communities, and wrote the Letters that are part of Sacred Scripture. He called himself “the apostle of the Gentiles” (Rom 11:13) and “I became all things to all men, that I might save all” (1Cor 9:22). He was martyred in Rome around the year 67. The Church celebrates his Conversion on 25 January and the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June.

O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the Apostle Saint Paul: grant us, who today honour his missionary self-giving, to draw ever nearer to you and to become, like him, witnesses of your truth before all peoples. Give us his tireless zeal, his love of the Cross, and his confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Through Christ our Lord.
