Prayer on the anniversary of the death of a loved one
The Church has celebrated since the first centuries the anniversary Masses for the departed — the tradition is attested by Tertullian († c. 220), by St Augustine († 430) who celebrated Mass for his mother St Monica every year, and is prescribed in the Roman Missal through the Masses «In anniversario» among the Masses pro defunctis. The Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1032 teaches that «from the earliest times, the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered suffrages for them, in particular the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God». This prayer accompanies the celebration of the anniversary of death of a loved one — parents, spouse, children, siblings, friends — combined with the offering of a Mass of suffrage.
Lord Jesus Christ, Lord of life and of death, conqueror of death on the morning of your Resurrection: today, on the anniversary of the day on which my (N.) departed from this life (on date, place, X years ago), I present to you my prayer of suffrage.
I recall, Lord, the blow of his/her death in my life: the pain, the emptiness, the unanswered questions, the feeling of injustice, perhaps the initial revolt against your providence. I offer you today, as then, all that is still wounded in me by his/her departure — and I beg you the grace that this annual prayer may transform the blow into communion.
Through his/her Baptism, through the faith received, through the Sacraments received in life, through the good works, through the sufferings accepted, through the final yes to your will at the supreme hour: grant him/her now, if he/she still suffers, what is lacking to attain the full beatific vision.
If he/she is already with you in Heaven, make him/her intercede for me and for those who remained. If he/she still journeys through Purgatory, hasten his/her purification by this Our Father, this Hail Mary, this Glory be — and (if possible on this day) by the Mass of suffrage which I offer (or which I have offered).
I commit myself, Lord, not to forget him/her. Each year, on this day, I shall repeat the praying memory. Each November Mass I shall ask for him/her. Each time I visit the cemetery, I shall offer the time of the visit for his/her soul.
Grant me the firm hope that, in the end, we shall rise together to eternal life. May the apparent separation of this time be overcome in the definitive communion of the heavenly Jerusalem, where «death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow» (Rev 21:4).
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto him/her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. May he/she rest in peace. Amen.
