Litany of St Michael the Archangel

A traditional litany approved by Pius IX in 1862 and reproduced in the Raccolta no. 469 (1898 ed.). It is prayed especially on the feast of the Holy Archangels (29 September) and in times of spiritual combat.

R. Christ, graciously hear us.

  • God the Father of heaven, — have mercy on us.
  • God the Son, Redeemer of the world, — have mercy on us.
  • God the Holy Spirit, — have mercy on us.
  • Holy Trinity, one God, — have mercy on us.

After each of the following invocations the response is: pray for us.

Let us pray

Almighty and eternal God, who in your ineffable goodness and mercy, for the salvation of men, chose the most glorious Archangel Michael to be prince of your Church: grant us, we beseech you, that by his beneficent protection we may be freed from all our spiritual enemies, and may deserve to be led by him into the august presence of your divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
