Let nothing disturb you — St Teresa of Ávila

An autograph poem found in St Teresa of Jesus’ personal breviary after her death at Alba de Tormes (1582). It is kept today at the Convent of the Discalced Carmelites of Alba. Prayed as an aspiration whenever the heart needs to be steadied: God alone suffices.

Let nothing disturb you,
let nothing affright you;
all things are passing;
God never changeth;
patient endurance attaineth to all things;
who God possesseth
in nothing is wanting;
God alone suffices.

Castilian original: Nada te turbe, / nada te espante, / todo se pasa, / Dios no se muda, / la paciencia / todo lo alcanza; / quien a Dios tiene / nada le falta: / sólo Dios basta.
