The Joyful Mysteries

Prayed on Mondays and Saturdays. They contemplate the Incarnation of the Word and the hidden years of Christ.

  1. The Annunciation of the Angel to the Virgin Mary. The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she shall conceive the Son of the Most High, and the Virgin replies: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to thy word. (Lk 1:26-38) — Fruit: humility.
  2. The Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Mary crosses the hills to serve the pregnant Elizabeth, and proclaims the Magnificat. (Lk 1:39-56) — Fruit: fraternal charity.
  3. The Nativity of our Lord in Bethlehem. The Son of God is born in poverty in a stable, and the angels sing: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men. (Lk 2:1-20) — Fruit: poverty of spirit.
  4. The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph present the Child, and the aged Simeon recognises him as the light of the nations. (Lk 2:22-39) — Fruit: obedience.
  5. The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph seek Jesus for three days and find him among the doctors. (Lk 2:41-52) — Fruit: seeking Jesus in all things.
