Tibi Christe splendor Patris — Hymn of the Holy Archangels

A Latin hymn attributed to Rabanus Maurus (Mainz, c. 780-856), Benedictine, archbishop of Mainz and doctor of the Carolingian school. It is sung at First and Second Vespers of the Feast of the Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (29 September) in the present Liturgy of the Hours. Four stanzas plus Trinitarian doxology.

To you, O Christ, splendour of the Father,
life and strength of hearts,
in the presence of the Angels
with our prayers and our voice we sing:
alternating in modulations,
we offer our song.

We praise with veneration
all the hosts of heaven,
above all the foremost
of the heavenly army:
Michael, who by his might
crushes the adversary.

By his keeping, drive far away,
O most loving Christ the King,
every wicked deed of the enemy;
pure of heart and body,
restore us to your Paradise
by your clemency alone.

Glory to the Father let us sing
with harmonious voices;
glory let us sing to Christ;
glory to the Paraclete,
who as God, three and one,
existed before the ages. Amen.

In Latin

Tibi, Christe, splendor Patris,
vita, virtus cordium,
in conspectu Angelorum
votis, voce psallimus:
alternantes concrepando
melos damus vocibus.

Collaudamus venerantes
omnes caeli milites,
sed praecipue primatem
caelestis exercitus,
Michaelem in virtute
conterentem zabulum.

Quo custode procul pelle,
rex Christe piissime,
omne nefas inimici:
mundos corde et corpore
paradiso redde tuo
nos sola clementia.

Gloriam Patri melodis
personemus vocibus;
gloriam Christo canamus;
Gloriam Paraclito,
qui Deus trinus et unus
exstat ante saecula. Amen.
