For the Faithful Departed (Requiem)
Prayer from the Mass of the Dead. The Requiem æternam is the antiphon with which the Church suffrages the souls of the faithful departed, beseeching for them eternal rest and perpetual light in the beatific vision. It is customarily prayed at the tomb, on All Souls’ Day (November 2), on the anniversary of death, and in every suffrage for the souls.
Antiphon
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Versicle and response
V. From thy holy dwelling-place, O Lord,
R. Look upon these souls.
V. I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he be dead, shall live.
R. And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever (John 11:25-26).
Collect
O Lord, we beseech thee, grant to the souls of thy servants departed the remission of all their sins: that through our pious supplications they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
