For Parents (Pro parentibus)

Traditional prayer for parents, found in the Roman Missal as a collect among the Prayers for Various Needs. The Fourth Commandment — honor thy father and thy mother — teaches the Christian to pray for his parents in life and to suffrage their souls when departed. Filial piety is part of the virtue of religion.

O God, who hast commanded us to honor father and mother: vouchsafe in thy clemency to have mercy on the souls of my father and my mother; forgive them their sins, and grant me to see them again in the joy of eternal splendor. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For parents still living

O God, it is thou who gave life and love to my parents to beget and raise me. Reward them for all they have done for me; grant them health of soul and body, long and peaceful life, final perseverance in thy grace, and heaven as their eternal reward. May I never be to them a cause of sorrow; may I rather be for them a consolation in old age and a help in death. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In Latin

Oremus pro defunctis: Deus, qui nos patrem et matrem honorare præcepisti: miserere clementer animabus patris et matris meæ, eorumque peccata dimitte; meque eos in æternæ claritatis gaudio fac videre. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
