Cross of St Benedict and Vade Retro Satana
A Latin formula inscribed on the Medal of St Benedict, deciphered from a manuscript of the Benedictine Abbey of Metten (Bavaria, 1647) and rooted in the exorcism tradition inherited from the patriarch of Western monasticism himself. The initials of the Cross spell out the verse Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti; the rim of the medal carries the Vade Retro.
Cross
May the holy cross be my light!
May the dragon never be my guide!
Vade Retro
Begone, Satan!
Never tempt me with your vanities!
What you offer me is evil:
drink the poison yourself!
Letters on the Cross: C.S.S.M.L. (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux), N.D.S.M.D. (Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux). Around the rim: V.R.S. (Vade Retro Satana), N.S.M.V. (Numquam Suade Mihi Vana), S.M.Q.L. (Sunt Mala Quae Libas), I.V.B. (Ipse Venena Bibas). Above: PAX (Peace, the Benedictine motto).
