Chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a traditional devotion diffused by the Redemptorists — in particular by St Alphonsus Maria Liguori († 1787, Doctor of the Church) in his work Visite al Santissimo Sacramento e a Maria Santissima (1745) — and by the Jesuits of the Apostleship of Prayer in the 19th century. It is customarily prayed on the Tuesdays of the month, on Fridays (day of the Sacred Heart), in the month of June consecrated to the Sacred Heart (cf. Monthly Devotions, Phase 3g), and in any moment of affliction or special petition. It is prayed on an ordinary rosary, counting the beads with the fingers.

On the cross of the rosary:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I believe in God the Father almighty… (recite the Apostles’ Creed).

On the first separate bead:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, grant me an ever-growing love for you.

On each of the three following beads:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.

Before each decade, on the separate bead:

Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory be.

On each of the ten beads of the decade:

Sweet Heart of Jesus, grant that I may love you more and more.

(Five decades are repeated. After the fifth decade:)

Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love. Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation. (three times)

Sacred Heart of Jesus, may your Kingdom come among us, and may now and always your love be the theme of our life and the goal of our eternity. Amen.
