Oremus pro Pontifice Nostro — Prayer for the Sovereign Pontiff

A most ancient liturgical prayer of the Roman Church, attested in the Litaniae Sanctorum since the 7th century and included in the Roman Breviary and in all editions of the Roman Missal to this day. It is universal custom to recite it every day for the gloriously reigning Roman Pontiff, and to enrich it with public recitation after the processions of the Blessed Sacrament, of solemn Vespers, and of pontifical celebrations. Pius XI indulgenced its devout recitation by decree of 20 February 1933, an indulgence maintained in the current Enchiridion Indulgentiarum (n. 25 §1). The versicle is based on Ps 40:3: «Dominus conservet eum…».

V. Oremus pro Pontifice nostro (N.).
R. Dominus conservet eum, et vivificet eum, et beatum faciat eum in terra, et non tradat eum in animam inimicorum eius.

V. Tu es Petrus,
R. Et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam.

Oremus. Deus, omnium fidelium pastor et rector, famulum tuum (N.), quem pastorem Ecclesiae tuae praeesse voluisti, propitius respice: da ei, quaesumus, verbo et exemplo, quibus praeest, proficere; ut ad vitam, una cum grege sibi credito, perveniat sempiternam. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

English (traditional liturgical translation):

V. Let us pray for our Pontiff (N.).
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

V. Thou art Peter,
R. And upon this rock I will build my Church.

Let us pray. O God, pastor and ruler of all the faithful, look favourably upon thy servant (N.), whom thou hast willed to set as pastor at the head of thy Church: grant him, we beseech thee, by his word and example to make progress those whom he governs, that he may attain unto everlasting life, together with the flock entrusted to him. Through Christ our Lord.
