Litany of the Holy Face of Jesus

A litany composed by the Carmel of Tours from the revelations to Marie de Saint-Pierre and approved for the use of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face by Pius XI in 1922. It contemplates the Face of Christ in the various scenes of the Passion — from the agony in the Garden to the deposition from the cross — and asks the grace of being conformed to it.

V. Lord, have mercy on us.
R. Lord, have mercy on us.

V. Christ, have mercy on us.
R. Christ, have mercy on us.

V. Lord, have mercy on us.
R. Lord, have mercy on us.

V. Jesus, hear us.
R. Jesus, graciously hear us.

  • God the Father of heaven, — have mercy on us.
  • God the Son, Redeemer of the world, — have mercy on us.
  • God the Holy Spirit, — have mercy on us.
  • Holy Trinity, one God, — have mercy on us.

After each of the following invocations the response is: have mercy on us.

  • Holy Face of Jesus, mirror of the Blessed Trinity,
  • Holy Face, image of the Eternal Father,
  • Holy Face, masterwork of the Holy Spirit,
  • Holy Face, in which the beauty of heaven is reflected,
  • Holy Face, splendour of eternal glory,
  • Holy Face, divine sun of justice,
  • Holy Face, lily of the valleys,
  • Holy Face, fount of life and holiness,
  • Holy Face, formed by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary,
  • Holy Face, bathed in tears in the manger,
  • Holy Face, covered with a bloody sweat in the Garden,
  • Holy Face, marked by the kiss of the traitor,
  • Holy Face, wounded by the blows of the soldiers,
  • Holy Face, struck at the tribunal,
  • Holy Face, covered with spittle and shame,
  • Holy Face, crowned with thorns,
  • Holy Face, washed by our tears,
  • Holy Face, exposed on Calvary to the gaze of the curious,
  • Holy Face, pale with the suffering of the Cross,
  • Holy Face, hidden in the tomb,
  • Holy Face, resplendent on the day of the Resurrection,
  • Holy Face, glorified in the heights of heaven,
  • Holy Face, refuge of repentant sinners,
  • Holy Face, fortress of those who fight,
  • Holy Face, hope of the dying,
  • Holy Face, joy of the just,
  • Holy Face, delight of the saints,
  • Holy Face, glory and contemplation of heaven,

V. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
R. spare us, O Lord.

V. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
R. graciously hear us, O Lord.

V. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,
R. have mercy on us.

V. O Lord, show us your Face,
R. and we shall be saved. (Ps 79:4)

Let us pray

Grant us, we beseech you, almighty God, that by venerating the outrages done to the holy Face of your most beloved Son, offended by the sins of men, we may deserve to contemplate forever the splendour of his brightness in heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
