O Eternal Trinity — St Catherine of Siena

The closing prayer of the Dialogue of Divine Providence (ch. 167), dictated by St Catherine of Siena in 1378. It is the crown of the whole work: the soul, after long contemplation, bursts into praise of the Trinity who has let herself be known and loved. Read in the Office of Readings on the saint’s day (29 April).

O eternal Trinity, O eternal Godhead, O eternal Deity, you are a deep sea, into which the more I plunge, the more I find; and the more I find, the more I seek you.

The soul is never satisfied with you, for she is not filled in your abyss, but continues to hunger for you, eternal Trinity — longing to see you with light in your light.

With the light of understanding, in your light, I have come to know your truth. You are that Garment which covers all my nakedness; that Food which feeds me with your sweetness.

Clothe me, O eternal Truth, clothe me with you, that I may run this mortal life with true obedience and in the light of holy faith, with which you have made me drunk. Amen.
