The Sorrowful Mysteries
Prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays. They contemplate the redeeming Passion and Death of the Lord.
- The Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Olives. Jesus, prostrate, sweating blood, prays to the Father: not my will, but thine be done. (Lk 22:39-46) — Fruit: contrition for sin.
- The Scourging at the Pillar. Bound to the column, the innocent Lamb is flogged for our offences. (Mt 27:26) — Fruit: mortification of the senses.
- The Crowning with Thorns. The soldiers mock Christ, clothed in purple and crowned with thorns. (Mt 27:27-31) — Fruit: purity of mind and heart.
- Jesus carries the Cross to Calvary. He falls three times, meets his Mother and Veronica, and Simon of Cyrene helps him. (Lk 23:26-32) — Fruit: patience in tribulation.
- The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. Nailed to the Cross for our salvation, he gives up his Spirit to the Father and entrusts Mary to the beloved disciple. (Jn 19:17-37) — Fruit: final perseverance.
