The Joyful Mysteries
Prayed on Mondays and Saturdays. They contemplate the Incarnation of the Word and the hidden years of Christ.
- The Annunciation of the Angel to the Virgin Mary. The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she shall conceive the Son of the Most High, and the Virgin replies: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to thy word. (Lk 1:26-38) — Fruit: humility.
- The Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Mary crosses the hills to serve the pregnant Elizabeth, and proclaims the Magnificat. (Lk 1:39-56) — Fruit: fraternal charity.
- The Nativity of our Lord in Bethlehem. The Son of God is born in poverty in a stable, and the angels sing: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men. (Lk 2:1-20) — Fruit: poverty of spirit.
- The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph present the Child, and the aged Simeon recognises him as the light of the nations. (Lk 2:22-39) — Fruit: obedience.
- The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph seek Jesus for three days and find him among the doctors. (Lk 2:41-52) — Fruit: seeking Jesus in all things.
